Sometimes, going green has its pitfalls. It's true, I'm afraid. Sometimes, you'll take a bite out of that apple and you'll get a worm.
And I mean that literally. But swap out apple for pear. Over the last couple of years I have been making small transitions in my personal life to be more environmentally responsible. Recently (upon learning that the production of organic produce creates far fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional production), I made the switch and rarely go conventional (unless it is local).
On Friday, I bit into a tasty pear to find I was chewing part of a worm. If that wasn't bad enough, on Saturday I was washing some organic lettuce to find a long green caterpillar (dead, thankfully--I think little kicking legs would have put me over the edge). I thought this was a tomato pest (which it is) so I have no idea why it was washed out of my lettuce, but there it was. A little green reminder that my lettuce had not been sprayed with pesticides.
After years of conventionally grown food, these unknowns that organic brings can be... disconcerting. Expect the same of all your green efforts. The unknown is daunting and not everything can be perfect your first go-round, but you'll learn something.
I learned to cut my organic fruit into sections before eating it. What have you learned?
